My son Coby was born with Down syndrome, but this didn't change a thing in our parenting plans, except make us more determined to improve his mental, physical & emotional development. It is well known that children with developmental delays and special needs benefit from the extra stimulation of being carried close to the wearer, especially during the infant stage. We found that most baby carriers didn't give him support for his low muscle tone. We began to experiment, and as a result the Baby K'tan Baby Carrier design came about. He got the swaddling needed, was able to sit up, while still having his legs and body in a developmentally appropriate posture. The Baby K'tan gave us the ability to have him face forward, observe the world & receive the stimulation he benefited from so much. It created the ideal environment for development and growth. All the attention led us to bring our Baby K'tan Carrier public: a Patent Pending 100% natural cotton DOUBLE SLING carrier ideal for Dads, Twins, Preemies, Breastfeeding and especially Babies with Special Needs. It offers infants a tight swaddled, deep pressure input, providing security and assurance to infants with sensory integration dysfunction and other developmental disorders such as Autism and Cerebral Palsy. Studies have also shown that infants with hypotonia (low muscle tone) are adversely affected by baby carriers that place their legs in excessive abduction (legs spread too far apart). With the Baby K'tan Baby Carrier, we have created a position where babies can still face forward and see the world while having their legs in a more developmentally appropriate posture. The Baby K'tan Baby Carrier has been endorsed by several medical professionals, and is designed for preemie to preschool; up to 42 lbs, for use in over 8 different positions. In our short time on the market, we have been voted one of Pregnancy Magazine's 2008 top 120 baby products, Pregnancy & Newborn's 2008 readers choice award, 2007 Creative Child magazine seal of excellence, featured on NBC, iVillage & Daytime, as well as in Redbook, Fit Pregnancy & People magazine. We founded our company on the premise that a portion of proceeds from every sale will go back to help fund education, medical research, advocacy programs and promotion of awareness & inclusion for individuals and families living with Down syndrome.
