Being Dad

Over the last few years there has been a rapid growth in information and resources for new moms in the form of books and DVD's. Like most products and services in the pregnancy and maternity market the vast majority are created by women for women. But what about the dads? Research suggests that when men are involved in pregnancy and birth and are supportive birth partners there are many health benefits to both mom and baby, so why doesn't the media and medical community make more of an effort to involve fathers to be?

Sam Holt was one dad to be who felt that there needed to be more information tailored for dads. With a background of running various businesses of his own Sam teamed up with a friend with a production background and created Being Dad – a film designed to inspire and inform dads to be. Initially the project was seen as a great excuse to travel around the country, meet a few new people and learn more about what makes men tick and how they cope with the changing role into fatherhood. With the release of their first title in Australia Sam and Troy soon realised they had struck on a formula that was popular with both men and women and the DVD's started being snapped up by small and large retailers across the country.  This prompted a sequel to be created that tracked the early years of parenthood from bringing the baby home through to the toddler years.

Interestingly the DVD's are marketed almost exclusively to women. Being Dad has become the number one gift for a dad-to-be and a highly valued tool for pregnant women who are desperate to find a way of getting their partner informed and inspired about birth and fatherhood. The DVD's are also used in many hospitals across Australia and the US in parent education classes as a tool to prompt discussion among parents to be.

Being Dad is distributed in the US and Canada by the Seedsman Group and more information can be found on their website www.beingdadusa.com or by calling Mike Currie on 805-777-7716.
