Booster Seat

Parents today have several options to choose from when searching for the right booster seat for their child. Whether baby is dining at home or on-the-go, there are four styles available as noted below. Additionally, there are several factors to consider when deciding which booster seat is best suited for their particular needs.

Types of Booster Seats:

Traditional Booster Seat

Depending on the manufacturer, a traditional booster seat typically accommodates babies who are able to sit up unassisted and weigh between 33-50 lbs. (depending on the manufacturer and style). They include straps that secure the booster seat to the chair, include a tray, and are primarily used inside the home. However, many of these seats do have the ability to fold for travel.

Clip-On Booster Seat

A clip-on booster seat can be easily secured to the side of a table or countertop using built-in clamps. They are a tried and true platform and are still quite popular. They are great for traveling or dining out and typically have a maximum weight of 37 lbs.

Space Saving Booster Seat/High Chair

This style booster seat is sometimes used as an alternative to a high chair. It is typically marketed to those parents looking for a “grow-with-me” option that will accommodate their child for several years. It is mainly used in the home as they are usually too large and bulky to travel comfortably with.

Foam Booster Seat

These booster seats are usually geared towards older children as the security features are limited. They are literally meant to give an older child a “boost” at the dining table to raise them up to a comfortable eating position. They are simple to use and are great for both inside the home and on-the-go.

No matter the child’s age or stage, your customers should invest in a booster seat that meets their biggest need. Whether that need is to save space within their home, use easily on-the-go, or simply give their toddler a boost at the dining table after they’ve outgrown their high chair.

Safety Considerations:

Chair Straps

Many come with two sets, one that wraps underneath the chair’s seat and one that
wraps around the back of the chair.

3-Point or 5-Point Harness

This is a safety feature that will keep younger children secured in the seat and help prevent
injury by keeping them from falling or climbing out of the booster. A 3-point harness restrains them at the legs and a 5-point harness restrains their legs and chest.

Clip-On or Removable Tray

This will provide a clean and safe area to place food for children.

Additional Considerations:

Age of Child

Most booster seats can be used starting at around six months of age, or when the child is able to sit up unassisted. However, some booster seats recline and can accommodate younger children learning to eat solids.

Easy Clean

Will the booster seat be easy to clean? Are there a lot of crevices for food to get trapped? Is the seat pad removable for washing? Is the tray dishwasher-safe? These are all questions parents will be thinking of when deciding which booster seat to purchase.

Size of the Parent’s Home

Does the customer need something that folds in order to store away after each use to conserve space OR will the booster seat remain in the same place for daily feedings?

What Will the Main Use Be

Will the booster seat be for in-home feedings or for use on-the-go? If for travel, parents will be looking for something that folds, is lightweight, most likely has a tray, and has minimal pieces/assembly.

It is recommended that retailers carry a variety of booster seats for parents to choose from, preferably at least one of each style. If space permits, there are gender-specific and character-themed booster seats available, such as pink/blue colorations for girl/boy and Disney themed boosters that have also become popular. Sometimes, booster seats are placed on a registry list, but there are also times when parents will choose to purchase an additional booster seat to keep in the car, or at a grandparent’s or caregiver’s house. During these times, it’s possible to have the child be part of the purchasing decision.

By understanding the booster seats available in the market, the main use for each, their safety and convenience features, you’ll be able to ask your customers the right questions in order to help them choose the best booster seat for their needs.
